Mixed Media Cardinals in Winter

Join us for our upcoming workshop!

We’ll be exploring the world of cardinals through the wonderful pages of Lisa Amstutz’s non-fiction book, “Cardinals.” This book reveals interesting facts about where cardinals live, what they eat, and how to spot these beautiful birds and their eggs.

For our art projects the children will begin by sketching cardinals with pencils. Once the sketches are complete, it’s time to bring these feathered friends to life with paint. While the cardinals are drying, we’ll shift gears and create a serene background of a snowy tree branch in winter.

Then we’ll carefully cut out our dried cardinals and place them on their snowy branches. And the children will have the option of adding a bright red feather for a special touch.

An opportunity to learn, create, and have a whole lot of fun!

Valentine Art Fun

Join us for our upcoming workshop!

Join us for a heartwarming Valentine’s Day art workshop inspired by the delightful picture book “Snowy Valentine” by David Petersen, which brings to life the sweet and subtle relationships among woodland animals in a snow-covered forest..

In this workshop, young artists will paint paper heart doilies with vibrant watercolor paints, adding their unique flair to each. Once the heart doilies are painted we’ll string them up into hanging garlands.

Hope you’ll be able to join us to see where creativity and the joy of Valentine’s Day come together through art!

Winter Watercolor Birch Trees

Join us for our upcoming workshop inspired by the winter story of “Over and Under the Snow” by Kate Messner, with artwork by Christopher Silas Neal. The book follows a girl and her father on a cross-country skiing adventure, exploring the activities of woodland creatures above and under the snow. The illustrations are beautiful and calming, and the white space in each picture provides a sense of tranquility that complements the narrative.

In this workshop, we’ll further explore the tape resist technique. Children will begin by drawing a snowy landscape at the base of their watercolor paper, using painter’s tape to craft trees against a blended sky. We’ll also experiment with watercolor shades, and add a sprinkle of salt for texture to bring our snowy scenes to life.

Once the paint dries, we’ll carefully remove the tape, revealing the birch trees. Drawing inspiration from winter and “Over and Under the Snow,” we’ll outline the trees and add touches, referencing photos for guidance. One of my most favorite projects!

Feel free to reach out with any questions. Let the creativity flow!
